JENNY LOU CARSON ~ THE CHIN-UP GIRL ~B.A.C.M RECORDS BACM CD D200
Born Virginia Overstake in Illinois in January 1915, she changed her name to Jenny Lou Carson and in 1932 with sisters Evelyn and Eva they became the “Three Little Maids”. It wasn't until the 1940s that Jenny began songwriting. Many of her early songs were popular with servicemen and she was given the title “The Radio Chin-Up Girl", hence the CD title. Her songs “Jealous Heart” (included here) and “You Two-Timed Me Once Too Often”, recorded by Tex Ritter in 1945, were huge country hits and in 1954 “Let Me Go, Lover”, (which she co-wrote with Al "Tiny" Hill - one of three husbands), became a huge pop hit for Joan Weber, covered by Patti Page, Hank Snow, Sunny Gale, Teresa Brewer and Peggy Lee. In 1971 she was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall Of Fame. Probably best remembered now as a songwriter, her songs were recorded by top country stars Roy Acuff, Eddy Arnold, Ernest Tubb and Red Foley as well as later stars Connie Francis, Tab Hunter, Fontaine Sisters, Perry Como, Jack Guthrie, Tex Williams, Ames Bros, AI Martino, Jim Reeves, Sue Thompson and others. She also recorded for Mercury, Decca and Victor, and 24 from then are included here. 4 songs come from 1939, with the Prairie Ramblers, 8 from 1944, 4 from 1946, 2 from 1947 and 6 more from 1948, the 47 & 48 records with the Tumbleweed Troubadours. Many of the songs have a sad theme and while some say she may have led a sad life the truth is somewhat different as Jenny was feisty among other performers and enjoyed male company which led to stories about her many affairs. Regardless, she left a legacy of great songs, some still recorded today. You can order direct at www.bacm.users.btopenworld.com or by telephone on 01304 205000.

RED SOVINE ~ HOW DO YOU THINK I FEEL ~ B.A.C.M RECORDS BACM CD D207
Red was born 17 July 1918 in Charleston, West Virginia. He joined his first band at the age of 17, worked with Johnnie Bailes as “Red and the Singing Sailors” and formed the Echo Valley Boys. Hank Williams helped him get a contract with MGM Records in 1949. Red cut 28 singles for MGM and became a star attraction on the Louisiana Hayride until 1954. He joined Webb Pierce's Wondering Boys band as leader and Webb led him to Decca. His first chart break-through was with Goldie Hill on the duet “Are You Mine?” (included here) and finally hit the top with a duet with Webb “Why Baby Why” (also included) and followed with “Little Rosa” (included also) again with Webb. Red tried the rock-a-billy scene but didn’t chart again until 1964 with his 2nd Starday release “Giddy Up Go” his first No 1. In 1967 “Phantom 309” hit No 1 and established Red as a Trucker’s favourite and the re-issued “ Teddy Bear” gave him his 1st Million seller in the mid 70’s (and a hit in the UK thanks to Sir Terry Wogan some years later).“Missing You” written by Red and Dale Noe was recorded by Jim Reeves in 1972 and a top ten hit. Red died in 1980 from a heart-attack. This CD shows Red as more than a narrator. with a good vocal and a singer of quality songs, some that he co-wrote with Wayne Walker and Webb Pierce. TED DAFFAN ~ GONNA GET TIGHT TONIGHT ~ B.A.C.M RECORDS BACM CD D208
Ted Daffan was born in Louisiana in 1912 but raised in Texas until he was 18. His first love was the Hawaiian steel guitar and after playing steel in various bands finally formed his own in the late 30’s. In 1939 he wrote “Truck Driver’s Blues” arguably the 1st trucker’s song. This gained him and his band “The Texans” a signing with Okeh Records. In 1940 he charted “Worried Mind”. 25 songs recorded between February 1941 and January 1945, including 17 out of 24 sides cut in Hollywood in 1942, were never issued due to the Musician’s ban and WW11. 24 of those sides are collected in this release, which captures Ted and his band at their best. 2 years after the war Ted was back recording his next single, his own songs “No letter today” and “Born to Lose” which became a million seller and gold disc. “I'm A Fool To Care” was another million seller for Les Paul & Mary Ford in 1951.Ted was probably a steel guitarist, singer, songwriter, recording artiste, band leader, music publisher (with partner Hank Snow) in that order, but will be remembered for the songs listed above and others including “I'm Losing My Mind Over You” & “Just Fooling Around” (included). 18 of the songs here are written by Ted some using his non-de-plume “Frankie Brown”. The musicians are all listed on the sleeve notes. Ted retired in the 50’s from performing but continued producing and publishing songs until his passing in 1996.His songs have stood the test of time and are still recorded around the world. You can order direct at www.bacm.users.btopenworld.com or by phone on 01304 205000.

ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL ~ SANTA LOVES TO BOOGIE ~ BISMEAUX RECORDS..CD9564
About this time last year AATW released this CD which is still available from their web site and as I missed the review last year, I thought I would include it now. This is a real “Christmas Cracker” and if you like your Christmas songs with a Texas country big swing band sound, you can’t do any better than this. Yes they include some chestnuts (pardon the pun) like “I’ll be home from Christmas” and “Silent Night” and even “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer” featuring Jack Ingram. But as you listen to Ray Benson’s vocal on “Santa Loves to Boogie” opening the Cd you just know you are in for a treat. Dale Watson then guests singing his own song “Hot Texas Christmas Day” followed by the bluesy “Give you my gift” featuring AATW vocalist Elizabeth McQueen. Next up “Pretty Paper” and a Christmas present with lead vocalist Willie Nelson (who of course wrote the song) duetting with Ray. Elizabeth is back taking the lead vocal on the Hawaiian “Mele Kalikimaka” (Merry Christmas) followed by “Santa’s on his Way” featuring Jason Roberts on vocal and fiddle with a real Texas swing number. The tempo slows on “I hate Christmas” (away from home) a tender Jon Dee Graham ballad. Then the afore mentioned “Rudolph” then Ray in fine vocal form with “I’ll be home from Christmas”. Kevin Fowler duets with Ray on their co-write “Christmas in Texas”. The Cd closes with “Silent Night” in gentle mode. No need to tell you the music is first rate, the production outstanding and have you ever heard AATW make a bad recording? I haven’t. www.asleepatthewheel.com for more details. ( I will be reviewing their LATEST CD “Reinventing the Wheel” next time).

CHRISTMAS GRASS 3 ~ 3 FOX DRIVE AND FRIENDS ~ KOCH RECORDS.KOC-CD-4425
This is No 3 in this series of Christmas releases from Koch and once again 3 Fox Drive feature. Their guests include the International Bluegrass Music Association Male Vocalists of the Year, Larry Sparks and Russell Moore. Larry soars on his rendition of “I Heard The Bells On Christmas Day” as does Russell on “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas”. Newgrass favourite John Cowan lends his vocals to “Please Come Home for Christmas” while Sonya Isaacs adds her angelic vocals in a duet with Kim Fox on “New Star Shining” and 16-year-old newcomer Sarah Jarosz embellishes “One Bright Star”. Kim once again shows us her songwriting ability in her original, “Watching Over The Soldiers At Christmas” which will be continually featured in years to come. This song displays the patriotic heartfelt sentiment about all American soldiers who have and are defending the USA and about the strength they find in their flag. (The recitation of “The Pledge of Allegiance” by Charlie Daniels was a little too patriotic for me, but then I am not an American). The musicians include Darrin Vincent & Byron House on bass, Bryan Sutton & Cody Kilby on acoustic guitars, Adam Steffey on mandolin, Aubrey Haynie & Joe Caverlee on fiddle, Rob Ickes on dobro, Joel Fox on banjo, Eric Darken on percussion and the recording is anchored by the family vocals of Kim, Barb and Joel Fox. If you like your Christmas songs with that acoustic bluegrass Americana feel, with additional harmony and variety, this is for you. Wonderful presentation and sure to enhance the reputations of all concerned. However I would have preferred some more NEW Christmas content as you can see from the songs included, all the standards have been done by a variety of country stars over the years. You can get more details at www.3foxdrive.com or www.kochrecords.com or buy at www.amazon.com

OTHER SONGS:-The Christmas song-Oh holy night-White Christmas-I’ll be home for Christmas.(10 songs-39 minutes).

SUZY BOGUSS ~ SWEET DANGER ~ LOYAL DUCHESS RECORDS
The opening paragraph accompanying the CD sums it up better than I could so, I’ll quote the paragraph in full ……“Multi might be the best adjective to describe the talented singer/songwriter Suzy Bogguss. Multi-award-winning, multi-platinum, and as her new CD “Sweet Danger” so expertly proves, she's multi-faceted. She co-produced the album with famed jazz/pop keyboardist and producer Jason Miles. The two brought together Nashville and New York musicians, culling the best of both worlds to create an instantly engaging, groove-oriented record infused with jazz rhythms and Bogguss' signature vocals…” Basically Suzy takes a collection of songs written by country writers and records them with a jazz feel. Haggard did it years ago with a “Trad Jazz” sound, Suzy does it today with a “Modern Jazz” combo. Her voice shines out regardless of the backing and arrangements. Her own name is behind 7 of the songs as co-writer, while husband Doug Crider shares 3 songs plus his own emotional “In heaven”. Other writers include Anna Wilson, Matt Rollings, Gary Burr, Verlon Thompson, Amy Foster-Gillies, Billy Kirsch, Gary Barnhill, Beth Nielsen-Chapman, Annie Roboff, Jon Vezner and Carson Whitsell. Suzy outshines Chicago with her version of their hit “If you leave me now” while the simple musical backing on “Even if it were true” suits Suzy’s vocal to a “T”. Faultless production, great musicianship and arrangements, outstanding vocal, and everything you expect from Suzy all rolled up in a jazz blanket will give the discerning music lover and Bogguss fan a treat, while the country fan, who just likes Suzy, will have their eyes and ears opened to a wonderful world of new sounds. Follow Suzy on her new venture and you will enjoy this CD like you enjoyed her others and you won’t miss the steel guitar or fiddle for one moment. www.suzybogguss.com is the place to go.

OTHER SONGS:- The bus ride- Everything-No good way to go-Baby July-Chain Lover-Sweet danger-Right back into the feeling-It’s not going to happen today-One clear moment. (12 tracks-47 minutes).

DANE STEVENS ~ GREEN HILLS ~ GREAT MUSIC 006
Dane’s new Cd for 2007 is titled “Green Hills”, a 14 track collection of 8 covers of modern country songs from his current stage act (listed below) and 6 of his own songs. This could really be called a “ By Request” CD or even a “Best of ”. Dane has re-recorded 4 of his most requested originals, 3 come from the "Across the miles" album - which is no longer available - and which won him the “Country album of the year” award in the UK Radio Awards, “Across the miles”, “Didn’t he laugh” and “Let’s have an affair”. Then there’s a bonus track of the original recording of "For Hank’s sake keep it Country" which also won 3 awards. This songs was only previously released as a single. The 5th new recording is the new song that gives the Cd it’s title “When I see those green hills”. The song "Together in a western dance" was recorded on an album of all original songs called "No other woman" which is also no longer available. Dane’s credentials as a songwriter are never in doubt as he writes good songs and delivers them exceptionally well, this is confirmed by the number of times he has been nominated and won awards, just for his songs and recordings. On the production side he uses Stuart Payne who is excellent on lead guitar and piano, while Dane adds keyboards, acoustic guitar and harmonica and takes care of production. If you have his Cds you will surely add this to your collection, if not, it’s time you caught up with a leader on the British Country Music scene. Watch out for this album and it’s contents in this years awards. Available direct from Dane via his web site at www.danestevens.com or telephone 01206 826093.

OTHER SONGS:- Two bottles of beer-Dangerous Curves-If you’re going through hell- Holding back the ocean-If love was a river-Suds in a bucket-Where you gonna go-You need a man around here. (14 songs-53 minutes).

MIKE ANDERSON ~ REAL COUNTRY ~ WESTWOOD INT’L RECORDS WIR0702D
Mike came to country music in his early days and learned to play guitar within the family while still at school . He played with a band in high school and in later life he had his own. After the navy and working in Alaska on the oil pipelines he settled in Wyoming. He wrote some of the songs included here over the years but finally got to fulfil his dream of recording with this 11 song CD. It features 4 of his own songs, plus 2 from producer Lonnie Ratliff who co-writes with guitarist Vaughn Lofstead on “The Mountain” and with singer Erin Hay on “Midnight in the old sailor’s home”. The remaining 5 are covers of Country hits Mike no doubt sings in his “live” stage show. Uncrowded country production, tight musicianship, down home fiddle and steel, good songs and good vocal delivery all make this a pleasure to listen to and recommend. Like it says on the sleeve “Real Country”. Standout tracks for me are “My heartache hall of fame” and “Midnight at the Old Soldier’s home”, but even the covers sound fresh on this CD, particularly the new arrangement on the standard “Red river valley”. More details at www.soundclick.com/mikeandersoncountrydrifter

OTHER SONGS:-Heartaches by the number-Rodeo cowboy association- Green green grass of home-Those unemployment blues-The thought of losing you- Auctioneer -In the jailhouse now-(11 songs-37 minutes)

COLLIN RAYE ~ SELECTED HITS ~ STAR POINTE RECORDS SPR1001
5 times nominated as Country Music Male Vocalist of the Year, five Platinum album, 15 No.1 hits and 24 top 10 single hits all just part of the career of this country vocal stylist who gives us his latest CD release. This is a new package for Collin, first off its only available at Wal-Mart stores across the USA and on the web and its for sale at only $6, about £3 at the current rate. It includes a lengthy interview from Collin after the songs, when he talks about each song in turn. 2 new songs are included his new stateside single “Quitters” and “A Soldier’s Prayer” and 4 new recordings of his best requested hits, all 6 newly recorded "live” with the Salt Lake Symphony Orchestra. “That's My Story” “Little Rock” “I Think About You” and “Love Me” . Produced by Alabama’s Teddy Gentry and Michael Curtis, it’s a new concept in releasing Cds, although the 6 track release is not a new idea. (RCA launched Vince Gill, The Judds and Keith Whitley with 6 track Lps, while currently 6 track Cds are popular releases from new artistes in Australia and here in the UK). Its nicely presented, gives great value for money and most importantly, it shows that Collin Raye has lost nothing of his vocal ability over the years and continues to please audiences across the country. For more details visit www.collinraye.com and www.starpointerecords.com (6 songs 28 minutes).

LEE GREENWOOD ~ INSPIRATIONAL SONGS ~ CURB RECORDSD2-78729
Here’s a collection of 11 newly re-recorded songs from the highly talented Lee Greenwood, originally released back in 2002. Now while the country gospel market is certainly limited regarding sales these “Inspirational” albums continually sell for many years and are always regarded as essential in the catalogue of established singing stars. Lee adds his great vocal ability to standards like “One day at a time”, “Amen”, “Amazing Grace”, “Rock of Ages”, “How Great Thou art” and “The Lord’s Prayer”. His soulful arrangement of “Amen”, and the up-tempo “Bound for the promised Land” (with a great harmonica solo) would lift any spirit. His recording of “You light up my life” should be re-issued as a single and could bring Lee back on the charts, and I found his version of “You’ll never walk alone “ just outstanding and way ahead of any version I have ever heard, and there’s another shot at the charts as a single release. The CD opens and closes with Lee’s own songs “Totally devoted to you” and “God bless the USA” now a patriot timeless classic. The musicians and production details are not included but the orchestral arrangements are excellent. Worth seeking out if the inspirational theme is your cup of tea, you certainly will not be disappointed. Check out www.curbrecords for availability.(11 songs-38 minutes).

CORINNE WEST ~ SECOND SIGHT ~ MAKE RECORDS MRC777
This is Corinne’s second Cd release and as a songwriter she knows how she wants the finished song to sound. She already produced her debut album herself so another view is welcomed and on this album she enlisted mandolin/guitar player Mike Marshall to produce. He makes a fine job of it too, having worked with Mark O’Conner, Bela Fleck and others as producer. Mike plays mandolin on ten tracks, and guitar on 2, while Todd Phillips plays bass on all songs. The other musicians include Jerry Douglas on dobro on 4 songs, Darol Anger on 4 songs on fiddle, Tony Furtado on banjo on 3 songs and slide guitar on 1, with Scott Amendola on drums on 6 songs, John Burr plays organ on 5 while Corrine and Charlie Edsal play guitar on one song each. The musicians all show their talents to perfection. Her subtle mix of country, folk, bluegrass and Americana makes this quite an outstanding album. Corinne writes all the songs except “All good things” which is a co-write with Mary Shero and Kenny Davis. The blend of instruments just suit every song, like the fiddle on “Gandy Dancer” and the acoustic lead intro on “Lost & Found” while every song is different in sound and style. Her way with words is outstanding and when you add Corinne’s clear and distinct voice, it all becomes a real pleasure to listen to. www.corinnewest.com for more details and watch out for her return tour in the UK in early 2008.

OTHER SONGS:-Second sight-Hell yes-Hand full of gold-Cabin door-Roses to rust-Eye of the storm-Diamonds in the wind-Writing on the wall. (11 songs-42 minutes).

THE CHARLIE DANIELS BAND ~ DEUCES ~ BLUE HAT RECORDS ~ KOCH RECORD SKOC-CD-4239
Charlie and the band have teamed up with some of Nashville's most recognizable artists, performing duets of Country, pop, and R&B classics, as well as some of the band’s biggest hits. The guest stars (in order of appearance) are Travis Tritt trading lines on “What'd I Say”, Bonnie Bramlett on “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” and newcomer Gretchen Wilson on “Jackson” all delivered as soulfully and as gritty as you expect from the singers. Vince Gill sings up a storm on “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down” while the first of the bluegrass songs comes from Charlie with band member Pat McDonald on drums, Charlie on fiddle plus Earl, Gary and Randy Scruggs on the Dylan classic “Maggie's Farm”, which lends itself nicely to the bluegrass arrangement. Then its time for some fun with Dolly and Charlie enjoying “Daddy's Old Fiddle”. Darius Rucker is up next on another Dylan classic “Like A Rolling Stone”.The 2nd bluegrass song features Charlie singing with the Del McCoury Band plus 2 CDB members Chris Wormer & Pat McDonald on guitar & drums on the Hal Ketchum/Charlie Daniels song “Evangeline”. Brenda Lee guests on “Let It Be Me” which I thought was in the wrong key for Charlie, while Kik Brooks & Ronnie Dunn share “Long Haired Country Boy”. Next up is Marty Stuart “God Save Us All From Religion” and then Montgomery Gentry share “Drinking my baby Goodbye”. Brad Paisley guests on guitar with the CDB on the instrumental piece “Jammin' For Stevie” a country rock bluesy piece especially written for this CD and featuring Chris Layton, and Tommy Shannon from the Stevie Ray Vaughn Band, plus Charlie, Chris Wormer & Brad on guitars. The tracks all cross the musical boundaries easily and is a great vehicle for the CDB, who have always made and played music at a different level than everyone else, but still retain that country feel. Far as I’m concerned the CDB light is still shining brightly up there at the top and this CD is another outstanding contribution to a long and successful career. www.charliedaniels.com www.kochrecords.com and www.bluehatrecords for all the details on how to get your copy, (13 songs-55 minutes+).

SHOOTER JENNINGS ~ THE WOLF ~ UNIVERSAL SOUTH RECORDS
On this album Shooter plays electric guitars, keyboards, adds drum loops and additional effects and he’s accompanied by Leroy Powell on acoustic, electric, slide, 12-string and steel guitars and harmonica, Ted Russell Kamp on bass and additional keyboards, and Bryan Keeling on drums and percussion. They all sing backup also. Then come the guests, Doug Kershaw on fiddle, Greg Murray on banjo, Jim Horn, Charlie Rose and Steve Herriman on horns, “The Settles Connection” on backup vocals and “The Oakridge Boys” on the song “Slow Train”. Vocally there is no denying he sounds like his Dad and it looks like he has his talent too, great on guitar (similar riffs occasionally), strong voice and his Dad’s songwriting capability to find the words to fit the tune, or maybe the other way around. While having a famous Dad can be a disadvantage in Nashville, Shooter has certainly dug his own furrow and dug a deep one too. On this collection of songs he shows he IS his own man, talent will out and it does on the CD. Great variety, great instrumentation, production and musicianship all shine around his voice. Then you have to add the songs, 9 written by Shooter, about his past and present, the contrasts conflict and effects of his decisions and the world today as seen through his eyes. These are great songs, all well written and all they need now is the exposure to make them well known. They sit in slightly different styles, a gentle waltz with gutsy guitars, what should be a smooth ballad “Slow Train” ends up a driving raunchy song with the Oaks, and the slow paced “Matter of Time” ends up a bright tempo 2-stepper and returns to the slower pace with great punch. Then add Mark Knopfler’s “Walk of life” in it’s new country style (released as a first single in September) “Slow Train from Leroy Powell, “Higher” from Leroy and Bryn Keeling, and “Last time I let you down” by Ted Russell Kamp and Anthony Smith. This is the first time I’ve reviewed Shooter’s Cds and I’m impressed enough to seek out his first 2 albums, so should you, its not your down home country with a Nashville sound but could be the future of country music, and let’s face it, Country need a future. As Shooter says “It's a country album that shows my influences from guys like Hank Jr. and my dad, and a lot of the country from the 70's and 80's”…“I feel that my first two albums were more like what we wanted things to be like. This record is more like what things really are”. www.shooterjennings.com and www.universal-south.com for all the details I can’t get in here.

Other songs include Reno and Smiley’s “Another Day” and two covers “My Elusive Dreams” beautifully delivered with his wife Debbie and “The Grand Tour”. The musicians listed below (a bluegrass who’s who) are all in fine pickin form and contribute greatly to the overall project:- Tim Stafford guitar and baritone vocals, Jason Moore bass, Adam Steffey mandolin and vocals, Ron Stewart banjo and fiddle, Tim Crouch fiddle, Doyle Lawson mandolin and harmony vocals, Barry Abernathy banjo, Randy Kohrs resophonic guitar, Shawn Lane tenor vocals, Dale Ann Bradley harmony vocals, J. The songs include 3 written by Steve, “It ain’t the leaving”, “Mountain Heart” (where that band’s name came from and includes the current line-up) and a co -write with Tim Stafford on “You couldn’t pay me to care”. Also included are the Fred Rose song “Big rock in the road”, “Livin it down” written by Elmer Burchett and Danny Barnes, Buster Turner’s catchy “Little So & So” and Lorne Roger’s “Cheater of the year” a great song in any style. Overall an outstanding debut album produced by Randell Deaton and Steve and it’s sure to cement his solo career . Check out www.lonesomeday.com
