SummerTyne Americana Festival
Four days of toe-tappin’ music and more on the South Bank of the River Tyne
NewcastleGateshead Quays
22nd-25th July
Rosanne Cash, Jakob Dylan and Solomon Burke head a stellar line-up
We are delighted to announce the line-up for our fifth and most high profile SummerTyne Americana Festival. Now recognised as a leader in the festival calendar for presenting some of the most credible and popular names in alt country through deep Southern gospel to soul, electrifying blues and rock, live from both inside and outside The Sage Gateshead on the spectacular south bank of the River Tyne.
The ONLY UK SHOW by Rosanne Cash and her band in support of her critically acclaimed album ‘The List’. “This is your education” said Rosanne’s father Johnny when he handed her a list of 100 essential country songs. Three dozen years on, Rosanne has painstakingly selected twelve and recorded revelatory new versions, showcasing her interpretive intuition and stunning vocal prowess. This promises to be an electrifying and unforgettable show from Rosanne and her full band.
Jakob Dylan & Three Legs: Hot on the heels of his recently released and highly acclaimed album 'Women & Country', produced by T Bone Burnett, this promises to be one of the must have tickets of the festival. Appearing for the first time in England outside London, The Sage Gateshead is thrilled to welcome Jakob with his band. ‘Women & Country’ has the same hushed intimacy and gorgeous vocal interplay of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ Grammy-winning album ‘Raising Sand’ (also produced by T Bone Burnett), but this time with Neko Case and Kelly Hogan taking over Dylan's higher register harmonies. Live, in The Sage Gateshead’s acoustically excellent Hall One, this will be phenomenal.
Solomon Burke is one of the most iconic and influential figures in rock music. The soul legend started out as a preacher and gospel singer; in 1964 he wrote and recorded ‘Everybody Needs Somebody to Love’, had another huge hit in the ‘80s with ‘Cry to Me’ when it was used in ‘Dirty Dancing’ and has been a GRAMMY nominee and winner. Solomon is joined by his full band the Souls Alive Orchestra with Phantom Limb and our very own SummerTyne Gospel Choir.
Other highlights:
- Murder, Misery and Then Goodnight: Kristin Hersh, The Handsome Family, Tim Eriksen, Eliza Carthy, Howe Gelb present an evening of the darkest twisted murder ballads in this especially commissioned show for SummerTyne Americana Festival.
- Down in New Orleans: Jon Cleary (Piano Bass & Drums) and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
- Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) & A Band of Gypsies – celebrating Giant Sand’s 25th anniversary, Howe Gelb brings his latest project with an incredible line up of flamenco gypsies to SummerTyne Americana Festival for its only UK outing.
- Jumpin’ Hot outdoor FREE stage including East Nashville Songwriters showcase (Eric Brace, Phil Lee, Peter Cooper & Last Train Home), Otis Gibbs, Rita Hoskings, The Toy Hearts, The Hi & Lo, Sarah Savoy, The Grass Mountain Hobos and the Bikini Beach Band.

WILL SCOTT AND JAN BELL, BRING THEIR BRAND OF AMERICANA, ALT. COUNTRY, AND BLUES BACK TO THE UK.
ON TOUR FROM NEW YORK. |
New York based songwriters, Will Scott and Jan Bell, will be on tour in the UK from July 16 to August 3, 2010 in support of Scott’s acclaimed album, “Gnawbone,” and Bell’s awardwinning “Songs for Love Drunk Sinners.” This is Scott and Bell’s second UK trip together, following a successful 2009 tour and debut at The Glastonbury Festival last summer.
Acclaimed, New Yorkbased, roots music songwriters WILL SCOTT and JAN BELL will be on tour in England from July 16 to August 3, 2010, in support of Scott’s album, Gnawbone, and Bell’s awardwinning Songs for Love Drunk Sinners. The tour begins and ends in London with stops in between that include performances in Bath, Brighton, Gillingham, and Southampton. This trip is Scott and Bell’s second UK tour together following their 2009 debut at The Glastonbury Festival. Shows generally include one or more sets from each artist, with a few collaborations.
Originally from Indiana, Scott blends soulful Americana and hill country blues, delivered with a voice that The New York Press describes as “thick as blood.” Scott’s live performances are known as some of the best in the industry (Twisted South Magazine). Americana UK calls him “one of the most impressive new acts of his kind to come along in quite some time.” His most recent release, Gnawbone, continues to receive praise in the US and Europe and is a nominee for “Best Blues Album” at the Independent Music Awards.
Bell was born in Barnsley and, since moving to the US in her teens, has made a name for herself as an alt. country songwriter. Her songs have been covered by Jolie Holland, Samantha Parton (The Be Good Tanyas), and many others. Bell’s album, Songs for Love Drunk Sinners, won the Independent Music Awards “Alt. Country Album of The Year” by popular vote and has received critical acclaim from Village Voice, The Nashville Scene, and Americana UK. She was recently featured in the London Sunday Times, proclaiming her a “latterday Loretta Lynn from a Yorkshire coalmining background.”
